How Teleclasses Work

Teleclasses are workshops, discussions, or seminars conducted by telephone. You can attend the class from the comfort of your own office or home. After you register for a class, you'll receive a confirmation email with the telephone number to call. Along with the telephone number, you'll also receive any handouts or pre-study materials that you'll need for the class.

At the scheduled class time (remember to check the time zone!), you simply dial into the number. The class will start on time. Teleclasses can have anywhere from 3 to 150 people on the call, though my teleclasses typically have 5-25 attendees. If you are the first person on the call, you will hear the phone ringing until the second caller joins in.

Teleclass Etiquette Tips

Just like in school, there are certain guidelines to follow during a teleclass. Please read and follow the guidelines below.

  1. Please call on time. You'll be welcomed and asked to state your first name and the city and state that you are calling from. If you have to call in late, please just listen quietly when you dial in and try to catch up with the conversation. We won't be able to stop the class to welcome late comers or to review material already covered.
  2. Disable your call-waiting feature (*70) before calling in.
  3. Please use a land-based telephone connection (i.e. no cellular phones or internet-based services). A handset or headset phone is preferable over a cordless phone. Please do not use a speaker phone.
  4. Call from a quiet place where you will not be distracted or interrupted.
  5. Be ready to learn. Have your handouts and notepad in front of you.
  6. Please put your phone on mute except when you are talking. Background noise is very distracting to the other participants. No heavy breathing into the mouthpiece, please.
  7. Please identify yourself before you speak, for example "This is Dorcas. I have a question about .."
  8. If you need to leave early, please let me know ahead of time.
  9. Please do not leave before everyone has finished sharing during the wrap-up.
  10. Please feel free to ask questions and share your experience and wisdom. That's what makes a teleclass such a rich learning environment! However, also be aware that there is a limited amount of time, so don't be offended if the facilitator moves on to another topic.
  11. Recording the teleclass is not permitted without my prior permission.
  12. Relax and have fun! Unlike school there are no tests. Plus, learning is an enjoyable process and keeps us all young!
